Drivers wary of fresh surface

Paul di Resta has said he doubts the newly repaired first corner will be ready in time for the first free practice session in Monaco on Thursday after a truck fire damaged the track surface.

On Tuesday a small lorry that was parked at Ste Devote corner caught fire, leading to damage to the braking zone and turn in for the opening corner. The damage was so extensive that a new track surface has had to be laid down, but with warm temperatures forecast to continue, di Resta said that he was worried it would not be ready in time.

"With the heat we have now, with temperatures not going much below 20 degrees and with track temperature at 45 during the day, you have to wonder at how that's going to cure," di Resta said.

GPDA chairman Rubens Barrichello also said there could be problems if the new surface was subject to wet conditions.

"We have to see if it rains," Barrichello said, "but I don't think there's any prediction of that."

Nick Heidfeld was less worried, however, saying that he inspected the area on a track walk and didn't foresee any issues.

"I walked the circuit and it looked ok. It looked like they did a good job," Heidfeld said.
