Jenson Button is fully behind the FIA's decision to ban the use of the Drag Reduction System [DRS] in the Monaco tunnel this weekend.
At most circuits the DRS is free to use anywhere on the circuit during practice and qualifying, but drivers raised concerns that use of the adjustable wing - which takes cuts the level downforce - in the tunnel would result in an accident. Button believes the decision was the only sensible course of action.
"Yes, I think it is necessary," he told journalists on the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes phone-in. "The tunnel is a very slippery place anyway, it's got a lot less grip than the normal circuit.
"Also you'll have tyre marbles bouncing off the barriers and coming down on the racing line. I think the first person who tries to use DRS in the tunnel is going to put it in the wall. So, yeah, I think it [a ban] is a really good idea around here. It's not going to help overtaking in the tunnel so it's pointless having it there, it's an unnecessary danger."
Button said the DRS zone, which runs the length of the pit straight, would probably not see much overtaking in the race, but thinks a combination of KERS and tyre strategies will result in more chances to pass than ever before.
"I don't think the DRS is going to make a massive difference to the race," he added. "It's going to be more the tyres and the KERS that will help with overtaking. With different strategies and the KERS, if you use it in one place, and the guy behind you hasn't used it, he's got a real big boost to get you in another section of the circuit. We've seen that in the last few races. It's still going to be bloody difficult overtaking but there's more possibilities than ever before."
