Sebastian Vettel said he was disappointed with his last lap error which cost him victory in the Canadian Grand Prix, but that second was still a good result.
Vettel had led every lap of the rain-interrupted race until Jenson Button closed on him in the closing stages and he ran wide in turn six to allow the McLaren through to snatch victory. Vettel admitted that losing the race at such a late stage was a disappointment, and said it was his own fault for not pulling out a bigger lead at the final restart.
"Of course you're disappointed I think it was a very difficult race from start to finish and we led every single lap except the last one - or part of the last one," Vettel said. "But I think I was probably too conservative when I was in the lead after the last safety car. I didn't open the gap enough so I was trying to hold the gap to the cars behind.
When I saw Jenson coming through I was pushing and I think it would have been enough to the end but obviously it was not because I did a mistake. So it's clearly down to me, I locked up the rear a little bit, what you have to do then is open up the car going a bit straighter and when there's only one line I ended up in the wet and it was quite easy then for him to pass."
Vettel said it was still a good day for the team, with two of his closest challengers Lewis Hamilton and Fernando Alonso both failing to finish meaning he extended his world championship lead to 60 points.
"Surely I think it's a good day today, [it was] easy to make mistakes, we've seen a lot of cars not finishing so it's good points but at the moment surely if you have got it in your hands and then you give it away it's not the sweetest feeling. But I think all in all it was a good race for us."
