Sebastian Vettel believes his pole position at the European Grand Prix goes some way to proving that Red Bull has not and will not be hit hardest by the clampdown on off-throttle exhaust blown diffusers.
Ahead of qualifying it was widely speculated that Red Bull would lose the most lap time by the effective ban on qualifying-specific engine maps to maximise the performance of the diffuser. However, Vettel took pole form team-mate Mark Webber at Valencia and, despite further restrictions on off-throttle exhaust blowing for the British Grand Prix, he felt somewhat vindicated after predicting that the changes would not damage his chances.
"There was obviously a lot of talk before hand, going into this grand prix, and there will be a lot of talk going into the next grand prix," he said. "Everyone will lose out something and people expected us to lose more than others, but that's where I disagree. Overall it's a very good day for us and very good to have another front row for our team."
He said Valencia was a difficult circuit to hook up a perfect qualifying lap, but felt he came pretty close on Saturday.
"It will be a long race tomorrow, it's always tough here," he said. "It's a tricky circuit, there are 25 corners here before we cross the line, and to get every single corner right is very difficult. So to get the perfect lap is quite tough but my first run was quite good and I was very happy, and with Mark [Webber's time] in the second run. It's a good result and a good point to start from tomorrow."
