Ecclestone spends fortune on houses for daughters

Bernie Ecclestone has dug into his deep - near bottomless - pockets to help his two daughters rocket to the very top of the property ladder.

According to the Sunday Times, Ecclestone doled out £101 million to daughters Tamara and Petra, as they bought up a couple of the most expensive properties in London. Petra splashed out £56 million on the grade II-listed, eight-bedroom Sloane House in Chelsea, while Tamara snapped up a £45 million house in Kensignton Palace Gardens.

Ecclestone, whose divorce settlement with ex-wife Slavica reportedly cost him £1 billion in 2009, said he was happy to help his daughters.

"I'm very proud of them. They're good girls," he is quoted by the Sunday Times. "They're not stupid when it comes to money. They are very level-headed and that's something I and their mother insisted on. At Christmas we bought them things we thought they needed and would use.

"They've both got boyfriends, they travel, and renovating a property will be good work for Tamara. There won't be a housewarming party for a while because there's a lot of work to do, but that's good. It will keep her busy and it will be a good project for her to learn from. I think they will even be able to make a healthy profit when they come to sell."

The news goes some way to explaining why, when asked about his plans to retire as Formula One's CEO, Ecclestone recently said: "I'm not taking it easy. I can't afford to take it easy. It's business as usual."
