Mercedes team principal Ross Brawn has dismissed speculation that Michael Schumacher could continue driving for the team beyond his current contract.
Schumacher's deal runs out at the end of 2012, at which point he has said he will become an ambassador for Mercedes. Comments made in Canada, however, have fuelled rumours that the seven-time world champion may look to continue his career. In downplaying Mercedes' chances of winning races this year, Schumacher said the process was a long one: "It takes time. Red Bull needed four or five years. With Ferrari that period lasted for five years. We cannot play with some magic and do it in half a year."
That was taken as a hint that Schumacher wants to stay with the team beyond his three year contract, but Brawn told RTL that the quotes had been blown out of proportion.
"There was absolutely no reason to drive that speculation. The situation has not changed."
Brawn also told German Sky television that any potential contract renewal had "not been discussed", but didn't rule out future negotiations.
"I am very happy with our two drivers - they are not the reason we are not winning races. Both our drivers have contracts at the moment and our priority is to make the car better. We definitely have another year with Michael and if with next year's car we can get the results we want, then I see no reason why we shouldn't go on. But at the moment there are no talks."
