JK Racing Asia champion to get GP2 test

The winner of the 2011 JK Racing Asia Series will be rewarded with a test for Caterham Team AirAsia in GP2.

The AirAsia-sponsored series runs as a support race at three grands prix this season, in Malaysia, Singapore and India. This year's champion will win a drive at one of the pre-season tests for Tony Fernandes' team ahead of the 2012 GP2 Series, and David Sonenscher, CEO of Motorsport Asia said it was an important link between the Asia Series and Formula One.

"I am very happy to be able to announce this award which comes about through our collaboration with AirAsia," Sonenscher said. "This will be a great opportunity for one of the young aspiring future Formula 1 stars, currently racing in our JK Racing Asia Series. The whole purpose of the JK Racing Asia Series is to provide a platform to develop young talent out of Karting and towards their goal of Formula 1.

"A test with one of the leading GP2 Teams, which is just one step from Formula 1, will not only provide further motivation for them to secure the JK Racing Asia Title, but will also give them an opportunity to understand what will be expected from them in their future careers. I am very grateful to Tony Fernandes for putting this together as an added bonus to AirAsia's involvement in the JK Racing Asia Series."

Fernandes said it was important to open up opportunities in for Formula One feeder series to those racing in Asia.

"At AirAsia we believe in making dreams a reality, and our extensive involvement in motorsports, from our Driver's Development Program with Team Lotus and Team Lotus itself, amongst others, allows us to continually be a part of the growth of our youth as they pursue their future. To be able to offer this unique and exciting prize to the champion of the Series is an absolute pleasure, and we look forward to catching some of the upcoming races in Singapore and India."
