No room for two Italian Grands Prix

Ferrari team principal Stefano Domenicali does not think there is enough space on the Formula One calendar for a race in Rome and a race in Monza.

Rumours continue to surround the possibility of a street race in Rome, which the city insists would run alongside the historic Italian Grand Prix at Monza. However, with Formula One reaching its self-imposed limit of 20 races per season next year, Domenicali believes there is not enough space on the calendar for one country to host two races.

"Our position is very clear and leaves no room for interpretation," he said before leaving for London to attend a meeting of the Formula One Teams Association. "Our sport is increasingly expanding the number of countries hosting a grand prix and all the teams are in agreement about that. Therefore it is inevitable that it will no longer be possible to have two races in the same nation."

However, he did not show an allegiance to either Monza or Rome, adding that the venue choice was entirely up to Bernie Ecclestone and Formula One Management.

"It's not the job of the teams who choose where a grand prix is held, that's up to the commercial rights holder," Domenicali said. "Everything else is pure speculation."

The only country currently on the calendar with two races is Spain, which hosts the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona and the European Grand Prix in Valencia. Italy held two grands prix for many years with the San Marino Grand Prix taking place at Imola alongside Monza.
