Austin secures contractor for circuit

Organisers of the 2012 US Grand Prix have put in place a contractor to start work on the new race track outside Austin, Texas.

Austin Commercial, responsible for a number of large-scale construction jobs in central Austin as well as the second terminal at the Sacramento International Airport, has been appointed and will carry out construction of the circuit's facilities.

"During this selection process we were fortunate to have the opportunity to work with many of the nation's leading general contracting firms which made this a difficult decision," Tavo Hellmund, chairman of the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix said. "In the end, the depth of Austin Commercial's local experience, diversity inclusion program and under-promise over-deliver record made them a solid choice. We are pleased that Austin Commercial has joined the construction team and are confident that their years of general contracting expertise will ensure we continue to stay on track for the first event in 2012."

The circuit will have a spectator capacity of 120,000 and its 20-turn layout has been designed by the ubiquitous track architect Hermann Tilke to make the most of the site's natural elevation changes.
