Fernando Alonso says he is relying on Sebastian Vettel making mistakes to get back in the championship fight this year.
Alonso is currently 99 points adrift of the Red Bull driver with 11 rounds to come, but even if he wins all of the remaining races he will not be guaranteed the title. At Silverstone on Thursday Alonso said there was no point hiding from the fact that he needs Vettel to slip up.
"It's true that we need to win races and improve our performance and be much more competitive than what we are now," he said. "But at the same point we need some mistakes from Sebastian to recover the gap, because without any retirements or problems for Vettel it is difficult to recover the gap we have now. He needs to do some mistakes if we want to have some hope, but we saw already in China or Canada that these mistakes can happen. We need to win every race we go to and we know that will be difficult so we need some help for sure."
One of the main talking points in the paddock on Thursday was the ban on off-throttle blown diffusers and the effect that will have on the front of the grid. But Alonso said he was not willing to invest too much hope in the regulation changes helping Ferrari.
"There is the ban on exhaust [blowing] under braking," he said. "I think it will affect everybody, more or less but still everybody, because we were all using the gas on the diffuser so we'll see. We've had some simulations of course and some loss of downforce under braking and it will cost us some lap time - everybody will suffer. We have no idea which team will be more affected, so we will wait and see on Saturday because tomorrow it will be difficult to draw any conclusions. On Saturday and Sunday hopefully we will see something more."
