Sebastian Vettel secured pole position for the Hungarian Grand Prix as he just beat the McLaren pair of Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button at the Hungaroring.
It appeared to be a straight fight between Hamilton and Vettel after the first runs, when Hamilton didn't appear to have a clean lap and he still managed to put in a lap under the 1m20s mark, comfortably beating Fernando Alonso and Button, although Vettel got within 0.1s with his first lap. On the final laps, however, Vettel went quickest with a 1:19.815, just 0.1s quicker than Hamilton who couldn't improve.
Button put in a strong final lap to take third, 0.2s slower than Vettel, with Felipe Massa fourth, beating his team-mate for the first time by just 0.015s. Mark Webber could only manage sixth place as he struggled in the second Red Bull, over half a second away from Vettel. There was also a big gap between Nico Rosberg in seventh and Michael Schumacher in ninth - almost a second - as Adrian Sutil split the Mercedes pair and Sergio Perez rounded out the top ten.
Alonso was fastest by over 0.3s in Q2, but it was Hamilton who caught the eye by getting through without using the supersoft tyres. It was an extremely competitive session as Schumacher, Sutil and Perez all made it through. Paul di Resta missed out by less than 0.1s with Vitaly Petrov 0.03s further back as both Renaults surprisingly dropped out in the second part of qualifying; Nick Heidfeld starting 14th.
Alonso was also the quickest man in Q1, but at the back Sebastien Buemi dropped out as Pastor Maldonado just made it through with his final flying lap. Buemi will take a five-place grid penalty following his clash with Heidfeld in Germany, so he only used soft tyres and was just 0.2s quicker than Heikki Kovalainen as Lotus got much closer to the pace at the back of the midfield.
At the very back both Tonio Liuzzi - who lost a bit of rear bodywork having run wide on to the kerb in turn three - and Daniel Ricciardo managed to outqualify Jerome d'Ambrosio in the second Virgin.
