Rosberg saves a set of supersofts in pursuit of points

Nico Rosberg is hoping he will be at an advantage during Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix after saving a set of supersoft tyres during qualifying.

In total each driver has a total of three supersoft tyres available to them for qualifying and the race as well as three soft tyres. Rosberg opted not to use the supersofts in Q1, completed just one run on them in Q2 and used one more set in Q3.

In recent races fresh rubber has been a big advantage and with tyre degradation levels expected to be high this weekend, Rosberg is confident about his chances.

"Qualifying in seventh place was ok today; we had a good set-up after this morning's practice and I did a good lap in Q3," he said. "I'm pleased to have saved one set of new option tyres for the race which will hopefully help me to score some good points."

Rosberg's team-mate Michael Schumacher struggled to find the right setup, and after qualifying 0.809s off his team-mate's pace - and behind the Force India of Adrian Sutil - he admitted the session had not gone to plan.

"The positive thing that I can take from qualifying today is that I will be starting from the better side of the grid in ninth place," he said. "However there are also things which we need to investigate further as the first two sectors did not work out well for us today. They were fine with the prime tyres, but not with the super softs, so we will have a close look into the reasons why. As always, we will try to do the best that we can in the race tomorrow."

Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug added: "It will be a challenging race for us and our aim is to come home where we are starting or slightly better."
