Hamilton fastest as Webber crashes

Lewis Hamilton set the fastest time of first practice for the Hungarian Grand Prix as Mark Webber crashed his Red Bull.

Hamilton's time of 1:23.350 was over 0.2s quicker than championship leader Sebastian Vettel, with Fernando Alonso third, just under 0.1s further back. Webber was fourth despite his mistake, with Button fifth as the top five were separated by just 0.422s.

In a session littered with small errors, drivers had to be careful of the wet kerbs and Astroturf following heavy rain yesterday. Mark Webber didn't heed the advice, though, losing control of his Red Bull on the kerb on the exit of turn 11 and spinning in to the barriers, wiping off his nose cone and puncturing his front left tyre. He managed to regain control of the car though and crawled back to the garage to allow the team as much time as possible to repair the car for FP2.

Webber was the only man to hit the barriers, but he wasn't the only one to go off as his team-mate Vettel and Hamilton were two of a number of drivers to outbrake themselves on the green track and run wide.

Hamilton was keen to get on with his session, and after being blocked by Jaime Alguersuari for over half a lap late on, he tried to overtake around the outside of the final corner before passing under braking for the first corner and parking his McLaren on the apex to block the Toro Rosso in a slight bout of retribution.

Felipe Massa, Nico Rosberg and Michael Schumacher were all a second or less off the pace as all of the teams only made use of the soft tyre, with the supersoft available as the option this weekend.

Bruno Senna was in the Renault on a Friday for the first time this season, and he delivered a solid performance, completing 25 laps and ending the session in 15th place, 0.8s slower than his team-mate Vitaly Petrov.

Alguersuari was the busiest driver, clocking up a total of 36 laps in the 90-minute session, while Lotus will have been encouraged that Heikki Kovalainen was able to get within 0.8s of both the Toro Rosso and Pastor Maldonado's Williams, although times are notoriously hard to read in to on a Friday morning in Hungary as the track will evolve significantly session-by-session.
