Nico Hulkenberg is targeting a Force India race seat in 2012.
Hulkenberg is currently a Friday morning test driver at the team, which snapped him up after he was replaced at Williams by Pastor Maldonado over the winter. He is still highly rated in the paddock after a number of solid drives in his rookie year and his spectacular pole position qualifying lap in damp conditions in Brazil.
Force India currently has Adrian Sutil and Paul di Resta in its race seats, but Hulkenberg said he is doing everything he can to try to stand out during his Friday morning runs.
"It's difficult to know, this is the ninth race so we are midseason," he said when asked what his chances are of racing for the team in 2012. "I'm working hard to try and convince the key people here and Vijay [Mallya] and to make a good impression. I think we are still a bit too far away from that decision."
Asked if he would consider options elsewhere, Hulkenberg said: "To be honest I would like to stick with this team and to race for them next year, but if that is not going to happen then obviously I have to look for a plan B."
He said the Friday practice sessions this season had been crucial for him to build on his experience.
"I've done every Friday apart from Monaco, which is obviously good and important for me," he said. "I have to stick in here and get the practice and practical running and stay in Formula One to build something up for next year."
