Robert Kubica has left the intensive care unit according to a spokesman for the Santa Corona Hospital near Genoa.
Kubica's condition was described as "satisfactory" and he had been "transferred as scheduled from an intensive care unit to a rehabilitation department".
He underwent a nine-hour operation last Friday and then a further seven hours of surgery on Wednesday.
He is expected to remain in hospital until the end of the month at which point he will be released to continue his rehabilitation at home.
