Chandhok praises Renault for giving Senna a chance

Lotus reserve driver Karun Chandhok has praised Renault's decision to give Bruno Senna a chance to prove himself at Renault this season.

Chandhok and Senna were team-mates in GP2 and again at HRT in F1 last year, but started this season as reserve drivers at Lotus and Renault respectively. Chandhok was given a chance to drive Jarno Trulli's Lotus at the German Grand Prix earlier this year and Senna was promoted to race driver in Belgium last weekend to replace Nick Heidfeld.

The Brazilian's race day at Spa did not go to plan after a first corner collision, but with the current lack of in-season testing, Chandhok believes new drivers should be given some slack in order to learn from their mistakes.

"Despite a shunt on Friday and another one into Jaime Alguersuari at the start, overall he [Senna] had a very good weekend and I'm very pleased to see him back racing again," Chandhok wrote in his latest ESPNF1 column. "It's nice to see teams give opportunities to new guys, like Tony Fernandes and Riad Asmat did for me in Germany, and Eric Boulier has done for Bruno here.

"End of the day, the only way we're going to get better and gain experience is by being out on track and while in the short term there may be some pain, in the longer term it could work out better for everyone."
