Renault targeting Ferrari

Nick Heidfeld says his Renault team is hoping to finish ahead of Ferrari this year after a promising start to the season with two podiums at the first two races.

Ferrari has yet to finish on the podium but its drivers have been more consistent and it leads Renault by 18 points in the constructors' championship.

Nevertheless, Heidfeld is confident his team can repeat its early-season performances as the year progresses.

"I think that we can do that," he said in a video on Renault's website. "It's certainly not going to be easy because we are competing with the likes of Ferrari now, who we will definitely try to beat. Mercedes seems to have improved and McLaren and Red Bull are still ahead, but the team's ambitions and our targets are clear - we want to go to the top."

Heidfeld said there is no reason why Renault cannot continue on its upward trajectory.

"We are working very hard, the team has made big improvements over the last one and a half years and if we can keep that development speed up, I think yes [we can maintain the early-season momentum]."
