Alonso pretty much on the button

Fernando Alonso said he was happy with the first day of testing in Valencia after he clocked the fifth-fastest time, 0.784 seconds off Sebastian Vettel's pace.

"The feeling is good," he said after returning the paddock to the cheers and screams of the Ferrari faithful who braved the chilly weather. "The biggest priority for this test is to do mileage, to learn about the car and have a lot of data in three days time when we go back to Maranello.

"Today was a positive day, with no mechanical problems at all in the car," he told reporters. "We keep discovering about the new rules, with the rear wing and the KERS, to get used to the system. The tyres degrade a lot and are not very consistent at the moment."

There has been increasing debate about the increase in buttons on the steering wheel in 2011, raising the prospect drivers may well get confused, but Alonso said it was an issue he was coming to grips with. "It's not the easiest thing to do at the exit of the corners … but we start slowly and we've done some practice in the simulator also.

"We started step by step. Some laps we activated the KERS and on others the rear wing. Then we started doing everything at the same time and getting used to it. Now in the afternoon everything was coming automatically."

He added that after the next tests in Jerez "would be enough to be completely confident in the new things".
