Barrichello finishes quickest at Jerez

Rubens Barrichello set the fastest lap of the four-day test at Jerez, recording a time of 1:19.832 in his Williams on the last of a series of eight-lap runs on Sunday morning.

Kamui Kobayashi, who caused one of three red-flag stoppages in the morning when he dumped his Sauber in the gravel, was second on the timesheets although his was a one-off among a raft of solid but otherwise unspectacular stints.

Fernando Alonso, again with sizeable home support despite the less than pleasant weather, was third fastest, like the other two on a morning run before switching to heavy-fuel sessions in the afternoon.

It was an important day for Bruno Senna, given his chance to impress by Renault after Nick Heidfeld enjoyed such a successful day on Saturday. The sight of him in the black-and-gold livery so closely associated with his uncle drew inevitable comparisons, but Renault played down attention on his times by insisting the day was about "new tyre runs and evaluating some changes to the car". As it was, he recorded the fifth-fastest time

The other big guns on show - Jenson Button, Sebastian Vettel and Nico Rosberg - all contented themselves with testing rather than attacks on the clock, often with heavy fuel loads. Button struggled to find a suitable balance with the car, and the day came to an early end in the middle of the afternoon following the failure of an internal component.

While Heikki Kovalainen again showed signs Lotus might be more competitive, even if his car stopped in the pit-lane entrance after eight laps in the afternoon, there was frustration for Virgin. Jerome d'Ambrosio stopped on track in the morning with oil-pressure issues, but what was expected to be a short hold-up turned into a four-hour repair job and he was only able to return late in the day.

Paul di Resta was the slowest of the day, his Force India finishing in the gravel as a result of suspension problems. Sebastien Buemi clocked the fourth-fastest time in the Toro Rosso.

The expected rain came slightly later than forecast, and while a few drivers did venture out on wet-weather tyres, it was too late in the day for any meaningful evaluation.
