Renault F1 Team third driver, Ho-Pin Tung, made sporting history last weekend when he became the first driver with a Chinese racing license to get behind the wheel of an IndyCar at Sebring International Raceway in Florida.
Ho-Pin was testing for the FAZZT Race Team with a view to competing in the 2011 IndyCar series as the team looks to expand to a two-car operation. He spent two days behind the wheel of the number 88 Honda-powered Dallara and completed a total of 211 laps, setting a best time of 53.5 seconds on the 1.65-mile Sebring road course.
"This is a great challenge and opportunity," said Ho-Pin following his run in the car. "The main goal for this test was to get familiar with the car and the team and it has been very positive experience. I'm now eager to spend even more time in the car."
Ho-Pin has also had the chance to visit the fabled Indianapolis Motor Speedway recently, which will hold the centennial edition of the Indy 500 next year. "I can only imagine how amazing it would be to race there in the Indy 500," said Ho-Pin. "There has been growing interest in motorsports in China and it would be incredible to be able to add to IndyCar's international appeal."
